January 08 - 13

The Meade Schools and staff would like to express our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Luis Rivera-Holguin. His sudden and tragic passing has had a profound impact on everyone who knew and loved him.  The funeral for Luis will be at 3:00 pm on Thursday at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meade.  School will be dismissed at 2:00pm Thursday to allow our students and staff the opportunity to attend the service.  There will NOT be afternoon preschool Thursday.  In addition our MHS Scholar's Bowl team will not be attending the Hugoton meet.  Thursday's MJH basketball games will begin at 5:00pm instead of 4:30pm.

The MHS CHEERLEADERS are once again hosting THROWBACK NIGHT!  This night of reminiscing will take place during the MHS vs. LAKIN BASKETBALL GAMES, FRIDAY, January 12th. Join us in celebrating Meade High by wearing your MHS letter jacket and old Meade gear!  Our Cheerleaders have some fun planned for halftime of the boys' game.  Come out for a night of great entertainment and show us your Buffalo Spirit!!

CALLING ALL MHS ALUMNI CHEERLEADERS! It is time to get your old uniform out and practice your herkie jumps!  Our 2017-18 Cheer Team is inviting you to relive the glory days by being an MHS Cheerleader once again.  This year our girls are inviting any former MHS Cheerleader to perform with them during the MHS Throwback Night.  The night of fun will be Friday, January 12th at the MHS vs. Lakin basketball games.  Current and former cheerleaders will perform a short band chant and crowd cheer during halftime of the varsity boys' game.  You are invited to practice with the team Monday at 7:30pm at the MHS Gym!   Please wear a Meade t-shirt or your old uniform.  If you can't make Monday's practice there will be a quick run through prior to the game.  Please contact Mrs. Harris if you'd like to participate.  Our Cheer girls would love to have YOU join them!

MJH Basketball News:  Our MJH Buffaloes started 2018 with a trip to Cimarron.  Due to both teams having large teams, we were able to play two full C games.  Our boys went 2-2 for the night.  Our A team boys came up ten points short, falling to the Bluejays by a score of 39-49.  Our B team boys captured another win, defeating Cimarron 32-29.  The first C game went to Cimarron by a score of 26-30.  We came back during the second C game to get a good win, outscoring the Jays 36-23.  Next up for the Buffaloes are the Lakin Broncs.  Good luck, MJH!

MHS Lady Buffalo News:  Our Lady Buffs began 2018 by hosting Syracuse.  Our JV girls came up short, falling to the Lady Bulldogs by a score of 31-39.  Our varsity team added another victory to their record.  They were able to capture another nice win with their 43-31 win over Syracuse.

Good luck to our MHS Scholar's Bowl teams as they begin 2018.  This week they will travel to Sublette.  Our team will not be attending the Hugoton meet Thursday to allow all our students the opportunity to attend Luis's funeral service.

MHS will host the Meade Piano Invitational Saturday, January 13th.  Pianists from both our HPL and the SPIAA have been invited to attend and showcase their musical talents.  The festival begins at 8:00am at MHS.  The public is invited to attend.

Next week is our MHS HPL Basketball tournament.  Early round games will take place in Syracuse.  The semi-finals and finals will held in Garden City at GCCC.  The brackets will be posted as soon as they are available.

FAMOUS KANSANS:  Our 7th grade students have been researching famous Kansans.  Some were born in Kansas and moved on.  Some were born out of state, but came to Kansas.  Some were born here and never left.  The students created informational trading cards for each person.  The cards on display at the Meade City Library in the Emily Pinnick room.  Please stop by to learn more about famous Kansans!

CALENDAR REMINDERS: Please remember, there has been a calendar change added to January.  The 5th-8th grade Spelling Bee has been moved to Tuesday, January 16th.  It will begin at 9:00am in the MES/MJH auditorium.  Our students will NOT HAVE SCHOOL Wednesday, January 17th.  The teachers will be participating in a district-wide in-service and training.  The MHS Forensic meet will be held Thursday, February 8th, NOT Tuesday, February 6th as indicated on the purple calendar.
