MJH Quiz News: We finished up a GREAT Quiz Bowl Season Thursday night at the League Championship Meet in Protection (South Central).
The JV squad finished the evening with a (10-2) record tied for first place with Spearville. Since we won over them in head-to-head competition, we took 1st place overall out of 12 teams!
The Varsity team met up with some tough competition and finished the evening with a (7-5) record. Four of the 5 matches were decided by only one question! It was definitely someone else's night. This very same Buffalo team placed 1st in Minneola one week earlier against the same 12 league teams! The determination, teamwork, and talent was something to admire in these five as they finished with a run of four wins.
It has been a wonderful privilege to work with all 15 quizzers this year. I so look forward to next season already!

+++++Meade Gating Task Force Weekly Update+++++ The Task Force has recommended changes to the mask requirement based on the fact that Meade has had low or no active cases for two weeks and after looking at other data and information.
Beginning Monday, April 5th students and staff will have the option of not wearing a mask once they are seated in a classroom. Masks are expected to be worn at other times. This is a temporary change until the Meade Board of Education can formally make changes to the masking policy at an April 7th meeting. Kenneth Harshberger, Supt.

Whether to extend remote learning longer or to include the 7th grade will be evaluated later this week. JH activities have been canceled for this Thursday. Minimizing the spread of COVID-19 and protecting students and staff are our greatest priorities. Kenneth Harshberger, Superintendent

If numbers continue to rise, especially with students and staff, Meade USD 226 could soon be in the orange level. Kenneth Harshberger, Superintendent

Meade USD 226 COVID-19 Update
Meade Schools continue to remain in the YELLOW on the gating criteria. While the county positivity rate has increased, student numbers in quarantine remain very low and active cases in Meade County remain stable. The district is in great shape heading into the holidays, but everyone is encouraged to continue to follow the 3 W's during Christmas Break. Kenneth Harshberger, Superintendent

Erin Abantoa in Mrs. Krier's Business Essentials class draws and colors a remarkable advertisement using the persuasive technique of "transfer" to entice people to buy. In this ad people associate the good feelings about Christmas with Tommy Hilfiger. Students learned different methods to advertise during class. Erin's project used the rhetorical device pathos - or an appeal to emotions. Fantastic Job Erin!

We are excited to share our 2020 MHS Christmas program with you! Our talented high school students have put together a wonderful concert that is sure to put you in the Christmas spirit. Enjoy!

KSHSAA Changes Attendance to Winter Activities
From Dec. 10 through Jan. 28 KSHSAA "will allow for attendance up to two parents/guardians per participant(s) family as allowed by local board of education or health department restrictions."
Rosters listing participants and two parents/guardians who may attend will be provided to schools competing in activities. Each entry should have a copy to check off those who attend. KSHSAA does not allow substitutes or children to take the place of a parent or guardian.
Participants include players, coaches, managers, cheer, dance (when performing), pep bands, and student journalists (filmers). The SPIAA League voted to not allow pep bands during this time to keep attendance to a minimum. In additions some schools have county health or school restrictions reducing attendance to less than two parents or guardians.
ALL KSHSAA indoor activities require the proper wearing of a mask. Activities this new policy impacts include basketball, bowling, debate, forensics/speech, scholars bowl, swimming & diving, and wrestling.

Meade USD 226 COVID-19 Update
Meade continues to remain in the YELLOW. Quarantines have gone down considerably and only a small number of students and staff are out of the building. County positive cases continue to be stable and much lower than several weeks ago. The 2 week positivity rate has moved to the orange level, but fewer tests are being completed at this time. The FREE rapid testing program continues to give assurance to parents and staff members quickly about a positive or negative test. Hospitalizations are still a concern statewide because of the lack of bed space for critical patients. The Gating Task Force is very pleased with where the school numbers are at at this time.
> 6 Students out of the buildings (quarantine, positive, or ill) 12/9
> 2 Staff member out of the buildings (quarantine, positive, or ill) 12/9

Meade USD 226 will not have school tomorrow - December 3.

Meade USD 226 remains in the YELLOW based on the District Gating Criteria. This is great news considering COVID-19 cases have continued to spike across the country. Meade County positive cases have dropped nearly in half since the high of a couple of weeks ago. The district has seen a few more HS quarantines that put them in the yellow, but the GS/JH is still in the green in this area. The Gating Task Force is very pleased with where the school district is right now. Finding hospitals for patients needing more care continues to be a challenge. Many parents are taking advantage of the FREE testing at the Health Dept. The district is very thankful to parents for utilizing this service. Kenneth Harshberger, Superintendent
> 19 Students out of the buildings ( quarantine, positive, or ill) 11/30
> 1 Staff member out of the buildings (quarantine, positive, or ill) 11/30
> 33 County Active Cases (11/30)
> 7.4% - 2 Week County Positive Case Rate (11/28)
> 0% - 1 Week County Positive Case Rate (11/29)

The elementary school and junior high (PS-8th grade) Christmas program will be recorded on Wednesday, December 2nd during the school day. We encourage the students to dress in picture day clothes for the recording. The program will be shared with the public to view on Facebook and the District website once we have it finalized. Tentatively we are hopeful to have it complete next week to be viewed.

KSHSAA last week approved new guidelines for winter activities that will impact Meade JH and HS.
> No spectators will be allowed for activities from Dec. 1 through Jan. 28.
> The Winter Moratorium for practices is from Dec. 23 through Jan. 3.
> The Winter Moratorium for competitions is from Dec. 23 through Jan. 7 (except virtual scholars' bowl).
> All participants/workers must wear face coverings properly (except during active play or officiating).
> Winter basketball tournaments will be limited to 4 teams concurrently.
> Regional and state piano, solos and small ensemble competitions will be changed to one (state) virtual festival in the spring.

Meade USD 226 was notified over the holiday weekend that two MHS students had tested positive for COVID-19. Some MHS student quarantines will be required as a result. Kenneth Harshberger, Supt.

Because of increasing issues with COVID-19, Meade gyms and weight rooms at this time are not allowed to be used by the general public without district supervision. This includes those who have an approved Facility Use Application on file. Facilities can only be used when supervision or coaching is provided by a Meade USD 226 staff member. Rec. Practices for 3rd-6th teams may continue with supervision by Rec. coaches. Even during this time, proper safety protocols and sanitation requirements must be followed.
Kenneth Harshberger, Meade USD 226 Superintendent

Meade Community - Meade Schools Need Your Help
With COVID cases on the rise and with the holidays coming, we need your help in reducing the spread of COVID-19 to keep our kids in school and in activities. We need you to follow similar safety protocols in the community as our students and staff do at school. That includes the following:
• Wearing masks in public
• Physically distancing
• Hand sanitation
• Avoiding large or small gatherings where physically distancing is not possible or at least being careful with distancing and wearing masks
• Stay home when you don’t feel well
• If you have COVID-19 symptoms, contact the Meade County Health Department or your medical provider
It is essential that we all band together as a community and are wise and methodical in our actions, so we can slow the spread. The Meade County Health Department and Meade Schools encourage you to join others in our community in this effort to help keep students in face to face instruction and in activities.

The JH Boys will play SWH on Monday November 23rd at Meade HS. C-Team boys will begin at 4:30 followed by B-Boys at 5:30, and A-Team Boys at approximately 6:45. Attendance tickets will be required to attend these contest.

The JH GIRLS basketball games vs Bucklin are cancelled tonight due to a COVID related issue. The BOYS games will be played and begin at 5 pm at the HS.

Meade USD 226 this week remains in YELLOW based on the District Gating Criteria. County cases have increased dramatically over the last 2 weeks. Students out of the building has more than doubled in the past 2 weeks and is expected to increase. Multiple schools in the area have gone to remote learning and the Task Force doesn't want Meade to get into that situation. Because of the rapid rise of COVID-19 cases, KSHSAA is considering delaying competition for winter sports until Jan. 15th. The governor has also issued an executive order to require face coverings in Kansas. Our local hospital is seeing many COVID-19 patients and finding a hospital in Kansas to take severe cases continues to be difficult because of the large increase in cases state wide. Kenneth Harshberger, Superintendent

Seating Limited for Meade Basketball Season
Because of increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases and to help keep Meade students in school and activities, the Meade USD 226 Gating Task Force has recommended limited seating during the basketball season. Both the visiting team and home team will be allotted 4 tickets for each player for the school to distribute as they choose. Only spectators with tickets, players, and workers will be able to attend the games. SPIAA League and District guidelines require masks to be worn for all indoor activities. All Jr. High and High School games will be played at the MHS Gym this year because of the higher seating capacity. The district should have a streaming system installed by December 12 which will allow community members to live stream the games in the future.

Today's MHS Scholar's Bowl in Minneola has been postponed. They are looking for an alternative date. The new date will be posted as soon as the information has been made available.

The Meade Junior High basketball games scheduled today at South Central have been POSTPONNED. This game will be played on to the regularly scheduled date of December 3rd. This change is due to a South Central COVID issue today.

Meade USD 226 this week has moved to YELLOW based on the District Gating Criteria. County cases have spiked and school cases are increasing. More quarantines are expected yet this week. The Gating Task Force is concerned that the district may soon move to orange and have concerns about what will happen after Thanksgiving. The Task Force has also recommended that seating be limited for JH and HS basketball games. More information will be provided as the details are finalized. Kenneth Harshberger, Superintendent

GREAT NEWS! Meade USD 226 has been selected by KDHE for a Pilot COVID-19 Testing Program that will be FREE to ALL students and staff who show symptoms of COVID-19. Appointments should be made with the Meade County Health Department (MCHD) where testing will be completed in a drive by fashion. If parents are unable to take a child to the MCHD, an isolation room has been established in each building where a county nurse will come to complete the FREE testing. The antigen test is a simple nose swab test that does not go way up into the nasal passages. Results will take about 15 minutes. Even though the accuracy of the test is 97.1%, KDHE recommends a follow up PCR test with a health care provider when the antigen test shows up positive. This FREE testing is available starting tomorrow November 12, 2020. Kenneth Harshberger, Superintendent

Yesterday, 11/10/20, the Meade District was notified that a student at the GS and a student at the HS had tested positive for COVID-19. Meade USD 226 continues to be in the GREEN based on the District Gating Criteria. The school still has very low numbers of quarantines and positive cases. However, county COVID-19 active case numbers have more than doubled the last two weeks. State wide cases are at an all time high and large city hospitals are at capacity and opening up additional COVID-19 ICU units. Several schools in our area have had to cancel activities and are moving to hybrid or remote learning. We all have to be vigilant in following the 3 W's so high numbers don't creep back into Meade. GREAT NEWS! Meade USD 226 gating data regarding COVID-19 continues to go down or remains stable as of 10/7/20. The chart below has areas marked in GREEN and YELLOW because several gating criteria remain in the yellow, but several have moved to the green. This has been a community effort. THANKS and keep it up! Kenneth Harshberger, Superintendent

Meade is excited to host JH Volleyball tonight at 5:00 PM and HS Volleyball on Tuesday at 5:00 PM. Three teams will be here each night, so the district recommends that only family members attend to help limit attendance in the MHS Gym. Family members are also encouraged to sit together. All spectators are required by SPIAA League and district guidelines to wear masks for indoor activities. Matches may be stopped, if this guideline is not followed.

Meade Varsity Lady Buffs go 5-0 at the Southwestern Heights VB Tournament today. Congratulations!

Meade USD 226 was notified today that a student at the grade school had tested positive for COVID-19. Addtional quarantines will be notified by the health department.

MHS VB Please Note: Admittance to the VB matches at SWH tomorrow will be pass gate only. Each player and coach is limited to two people and those names are submitted via a pas list. You will not be able to attend if you are not listed on the pass gate. Good Luck Lady Buffs!

HS VB: Lady Buffs lose a close one to Spearville. Keep getting better!

Meade Patrons: The Meade Gating Task Force met this morning to determine gating levels for each building and the district. The gating data has improved significantly for the grade school and as a result the grade school will resume FULL ON SITE instruction starting TOMORROW, Wednesday, 9/30/2020. Students still in quarantine will not be able to return until their release date. Attached is a gating chart which will be used in the future to indicate risk levels for each building and the district. Also a table has been included showing current numbers as of 9/28/20. There will be a large number of GS students who come out of quarantine tomorrow and another large group on Thursday which will drop those quarantined to below 10% from a high of over 30%. A BIG THANKS goes to parents for helping out during these challenging times. Kenneth Harshberger, Superintendent

The USD 226 Board of Education approved new "gating criteria" last Thursday. "Gating" refers to when students may be moved (gated) between on site or remote instruction. A task force made up of 2 board members, 2 teachers, the health department administrator, and the school administration was created to look at the criteria each week to determine the risk level for the district and each building. Each risk level is color coded to make it easier for everyone to identify levels (green - low; yellow - moderate; orange - moderately high; red - high). All criteria will be used as a whole to determine risk levels, but one exceedingly high level may be used as a determining factor. The task force will also look at grade bands and specific activity groups to see if they might be able to be at school when other grades or activity groups cannot be on site. If the task force recommends that a building and/or district go fully remote, the board of education will make the final decision. If risk levels change, information will be announced when available. Hopefully this information will be helpful to patrons when certain restrictions are put in place or eased. Kenneth Harshberger, Superintendent

Curbside Meals for students enrolled in the high school and grade school will resume on Monday, Sept. 28th from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Students in the building will eat as normal, but meals for students quarantined at home or in remote learning may be picked up at the main GS front entrance and the HS west entrance. Meals for those students required to stay home will continue throughout the rest of the year. When lunch is picked up, a breakfast for the next day will be sent home too. Remember these meals are FREE to ALL students through December. A survey link will be sent out soon to help determine the number of meals to be picked up. Kenneth Harshberger, Superintendent

The Meade Board of Education tonight approved reopening the High School for on site instruction in the building starting tomorrow, Sept. 25. Activity practices may also begin for High School. Because of staff availability, high numbers of quarantines, and positive cases moving to on site instruction in the Grade School building will NOT be considered until next week. The board also approved new Gating Criteria and created a task force to make decisions in the future about when instruction will be on site or remote. When changes are finalized, this information will be placed on the district website and Facebook page.

Special Board Meeting - September 24, 2020 @ 5:30 PM at the MHS Library.

Meade USD 226 was notified today, Sept. 23, 2020, by the Meade County Health Department of 2 new students that tested positive for COVID-19: one at the high school and one at the grade school. Those requiring additional quarantine will be contacted by the health department. Fortunately since the district was in remote learning additional quarantines should be limited.
Kenneth Harshberger, Superintendent

Meade USD 226 Patrons:
The district was notified this morning by the Meade County Health Department that they had received new information regarding contact tracing of possible exposures at the high school. As a result 19 HS students and 2 HS staff members listed yesterday as being quarantined will in fact NOT be quarantined due to COVID-19. This is very positive news for our students, staff, high school, and community.
Below is a new graphic that shows information about positive cases and quarantines at both the grade school and high school as of 9/21/20. With the new information today, the number of new students and staff expected to quarantine at the high school went down by 21 individuals. This information will be used by the administration and board at a meeting on Thursday, Sept. 24th to examine the possibility of returning to in person instruction soon at the high school.
The number of students and staff out at the grade school is significantly larger than the high school, so hopefully these numbers go down soon. Factors to be looked at include staff availability, number of students quarantined, positive COVID numbers, county positivity rate, and possibly other factors. New positive cases and quarantines continue to show up almost daily. Any information to resume in person instruction at either building will be announced as soon as available.
Kenneth Harshberger Superintendent

Meade Patrons:
Meade USD 226 was notified today, 9/21/20, by the Meade County Health Department of new positive COVID-19 cases: 2 staff members at the grade school and 1 student at the high school. County health officials will contact additional individuals who need to be quarantined. The chart below shows the number of positive cases and quarantines that have been required just today for staff and students. The district plans to provide additional information later this week to help everyone better understand all the quarantines and positive cases the district is facing. Kenneth Harshberger, Superintendent

Meade School Patrons: The district was notified today that another high school student had tested positive for COVID-19. The Meade County Health Department will contact students and other individuals who may be required to quarantine. As always, if a student shows symptoms of COVID-19, please seek medical attention immediately.

Parents are asked to call the Meade High School (873-2981) by 11:00 AM this morning if they have no home internet access. Hopefully the district can get routers in place by Monday as we move to Remote Learning.

Meade Community: Due to the high rate of positive COVID-19 cases in Meade, additional staff members who have tested positive or are in quarantine, students in quarantine, and now a positive student from each building, Meade Schools are forced to make a difficult decision. On Friday, September 18th there will be NO SCHOOL for ALL students. On Monday, September 21st remote instruction with teachers will begin for PS-12th grade. Teachers will connect with students through Zoom, Google Classroom, Seesaw, or some other means. Be on the lookout for further announcements. Remote instruction will continue at least through next week and possibly longer based on the number of positive cases and quarantines that continue to impact students, staff, and the community. Students are being asked to take home necessary materials, books, and Chromebooks today to prepare for Monday. If a parent does not have internet access, they are asked to contact the school. All activities and practices have been canceled until at least through next week and possibly longer. Individuals who need to be quarantined will be contacted by the Meade County Health Department. It is recommended that other students stay at home as much as possible and not congregate to help reduce the chances of further transmissions. We understand this will be difficult for many, but based on state and local health officials’ guidance, this is in the best interest of our students, staff, and community to help mitigate the rapid rise of COVID-19 cases in Meade. Kenneth Harshberger, Superintendent

Meade School District Patrons: We all know that with the spike in cases in Meade our school district has been impacted. As always, when a positive case is reported, the Meade County Health Department works with guidance from the state epidemiologists to make recommendations about any quarantine. The school district then follows that guidance. Every situation is different, so state recommendations may very as well. The district is working to communicate these recommendations when appropriate, all while trying to protect student and staff privacy as much as possible. Unfortunately there has still been some misinformation about cases. As of this morning (9-16-20) there has been NO report of any Meade student testing positive for COVID-19 according to the Meade County Health Department. This can change at any time, so we all need to be vigilante in taking necessary precautions. There are several staff members who have tested positive and have been quarantined. On a regular basis the state and county health officials have recommended that a number of students and some staff members be in quarantine who have NOT tested positive. As a result, some students are taking classes remotely and some teachers are teaching from home. The district will continue to follow recommendations from health professionals during this difficult time. While we hope that COVID-19 case numbers subside, it is likely new cases will surface off and on during the school year. Thank you for your help and understanding during these unusual times. Kenneth Harshberger, Superintendent

On Sept. 15, 2020 the Meade School District was notified that another staff member had tested positive for COVID-19 at the grade school. Staff and students that need to be quarantined have been contacted after following guidance from the state and the Meade County Health Department. Additional sanitation has already been completed. As always individuals who are showing symptoms of COVID-19 should not come to school. Meade County currently has a large spike in cases and as a result the Meade County Commission issued a mask order for the county to help protect against further spread. As a result students, staff, and visitors should put on masks well before entering the building. We appreciate all your help in protecting our students and staff. Kenneth Harshberger, Superintendent

Announcement: MHS C team VB scheduled for tomorrow @ Meade vs Ingalls has been cancelled.

Announcement: Meade High JV FB for Monday, 9.14.20 has been cancelled.

USD 226 Patrons: After school on September 11 and on September 12, 2020 the district received notification from the Meade County Health Department that two staff members from the grade school had tested positive for COVID-19. Because one individual was in quarantine for nearly a week, no students or other staff members were impacted. The other individual has been quarantined along with close contacts since testing positive. The state and Meade County Health Department has not recommended quarantine for other students or staff at this time because they are not considered close contacts. Symptoms of COVID-19 should continue to be monitored by everyone and individuals should not come to the school if symptoms are present. As always the district will continue to take measures to maintain a safe learning environment for everyone. Already additional sanitation has been completed in the buildings. Kenneth Harshberger, Superintendent

GREAT NEWS FOR FAMILIES!
Because of a new federal program just released, starting today ALL children ages 1-18 can receive free breakfast and lunch at school through December 2020. The district will serve these free meals to ALL students currently eating at school and will consider plans to provide these free meals to children not in school. Payment for meals already received will roll over to the next semester.

USD 226 Students, Staff, and Parents:
On Monday, August 31, 2020 the district received notification that two students at the high school and one staff member at the grade school tested positive for COVID-19. None have been in school since last Friday. Rest assured the district takes this matter seriously. The Meade County Health Department reached out to the school and to close contacts of those testing positive. Proper quarantine protocol has been instituted as necessary.
Although this is new for everyone, the district will continue to take measures to maintain a safe learning environment for our staff and students. Extra sanitation has been performed in both buildings this evening.
Out of an abundance of caution, staff and students are requested to contact their physician if COVID-19 symptoms appear and also continue to follow COVID-19 safety guidelines. Meade USD 226 apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the building principals, superintendent, or the Meade County Health Department.
Sincerely,
Kenneth Harshberger, Superintendent.

School Communication About COVID-19 to the Public
Because of federal guidelines the school district is restricted in communication about staff or students effected by COVID-19. After considering input from both legal and health organizations, the district will be cautious about releasing information regarding those impacted by COVID-19. Based on the best guidance, the district will only release information directly to the public when an individual who has been in the school facility tests positive for COVID-19. No individual will be identified and the notice will be general in nature to protect all those involved. Going forward, if a student or staff member is quarantined because of being just a close contact of someone who tests positive, no information will be released unless the person later tests positive for COVID-19.

Reminder: XC practice starts at 6am on Monday. Athletes should bring their own water bottle and mask (to be worn inside only).

Meade High School Graduation will be live streamed via the USD 226 Facebook page. It will begin 5 minutes prior to the ceremony which kicks off at 3pm this Sunday, July 26th.

Yesterday the State Board of Education did not approve delaying the start of school. As a result, last night the Meade Board of Education approved starting school with students on August 20th. This is two days later than the original start date which allows staff more time to prepare. PS-K will not begin until August 24th. Enrollment information will be out next week. The district is committed to providing three learning models for students: 1) Face to face learning; 2) Remote learning if a student has to remain at home for a short time; and 3) An online program for those who choose to be solely at home.

Senior Graduation (July 26th - 3:00 pm) and 8th Grade Promotion (July 27th - 7:00 pm) are still planned at the MHS Gym. However, due to a recent increase in COVID-19 cases, local health officials recommended additional precautions be considered. As a result the Meade Board has added the following guidelines: 1) All participants will be required to wear masks or a face covering; 2) Those attending are limited to immediate families; 3) Individuals who have been in a hot spot or state that KDHE says requires a 14 day quarantine are requested to not attend. Thank you for helping to make this a successful and safe time for our graduates!

This is just a friendly reminder to our parents and community. The school gyms and the weight rooms are not open to the public at this time. They are only open to student groups that have planned activities organized by coaches. These scheduled events help the district maintain sanitary precautions to keep everyone as safe as possible. Thank you for your help.

Reminder for ALL 7th and 8th grade boys AND girls interested in basketball. There will be a team camp for you to attend, if you like, from 10:30am-12:00pm July 20th-23rd at the high school gym. YIKES! My apologies to you regarding my Dr. Seuss Day reminder. Dr. Seuss Day has been canceled.
I thought I was going to get ahead of the game, so prior to leaving for Spring Break I scheduled a Dr. Seuss Day reminder to appear at 2:00am today. Unfortunately, due to current events, our Dr. Seuss Day has been cancelled. Equally unfortunate, I forgot to remove the scheduled post. I know many people saw the post. Some sent DMs about it (THANK YOU!). I immediately deleted the post from our Live Feed, Facebook, and Twitter. Again, I apologize for the confusion.
Have a great day and stay safe,
Stacy Cordes
*This post is WAY to long to be a tweet, so hopefully our Twitter followers are FB and LF followers as well.

Even though school buildings have closed in Kansas, education will not end. A KSDE Task Force will release ideas today to help schools provide continuous learning. In turn it will take Meade USD 226 some time to put local plans in place for meals as well as learning. Expect more announcements in the next several day.
Kenneth Harshberger, Superintendent

This afternoon, Gov. Kelly announced schools would be closed until the end of the school year due to COVID-19. KSDE will give guidance soon on how schools provide "continuous learning" for students during this time. Offering take home meals is also something which may be allowed.

The Commissioner of Education, Randy Watson, along with the Kansas BOE, KSDE, KSHE and the Speaker of the House is strongly recommending all schools in Kansas close March 16th through the 20th. While Meade USD 226 is on Spring Break, the school will be closed for all activities.

Yesterday KSHSAA canceled Regional Music and today they announced - "Effective Monday, March 16, all spring sports and activities are suspended through Sunday, March 22. This includes cancellation of all practices and competitions." Please monitor our social media for updates.
