Meade County Conservation District Hosts 4th Annual Progressive Ag Safety Day
The Meade County Conservation District recently hosted the 4th Annual Progressive Agriculture Safety Day® at the Meade County Fairgrounds, drawing 126 third- and fourth-grade students from across the county. They were joined by 20 school staff and supported by 42 dedicated volunteers who helped bring the day to life.
Eleven classes rotated through 14 hands-on learning stations that covered a wide range of safety topics, including seat belt safety, animal safety, cyber safety, weather safety, grain safety, dairy safety, outdoor safety, first aid, lawn mower safety, hand tool safety, and electric safety. The goal of the day was to give children practical tools to stay safe in both rural and everyday settings.
Volunteers included Kamy Whatley (Dairy Max); Jared Weber, Mike Gillen, Ethan Fast, Kaidin Upson and Jose Osornio (CMS); Crystal Torres and Amy Meyer (Artesian Valley Health); Trooper Anthony Caldaron (KHP); Wadonna Henson (KSU); Kindra Adams (NRCS); Jason Cowan and JR Dailey (MKC); Deputies Pippit and Guerrero (Meade Sheriff’s Office); Jon Mitchel and Liz Heath (Wildlife and Parks); Sam Brown (NOAA); Mrs. Miller’s AG class, Ms. Goossen’s FFA students, and Dairy Max.
A hearty lunch was donated by Meade Locker and Processing hotdogs, Meade Thriftway chips and Dairy Max milk and cheese, Cookies came courtesy of AVHS dietary staff, water donated by Allied Ag Solutions (Preston Cunningham) and Constellation Energy (Kelsey Cordes), and volunteers enjoyed desserts made by Abigail Orth and Decina Heinz. The Meade County Fair Board generously waived the fairgrounds usage fee. Goodie bag items were provided by Meade County Community Foundation, United Wireless and Dairy Max.
The event also recognized the behind-the-scenes efforts of the “chaos supervisors”—Cindy Brenner, Janet Rickard, Jana Orth, Marc Berghaus, and Maddison Best—along with photographer Katie McClaren, who helped capture the day.
Financial support was provided by EGE LLC, Meade State Bank, JKL Construction, Conestoga, City of Meade, Bank of the Plains, Alliance Ag, City of Fowler, BTI, Max Papay, Meade County, Flying W Pheasant Ranch, Leon & Tammy Winfrey, and the Meade County Community Foundation.
The Conservation District Board is comprised of Laural Ediger, Doug Heinz, Brad Freisen, Mark Painter, and Kevin Price, with Laural, Doug, and Brad assisting in serving lunch. The District Manager is Casie McAtee.
Progressive Agriculture Safety Day® is recognized as the largest rural safety and health education program for children in North America. Since its inception in 1995, more than 2 million individuals have been reached across 45 states, two territories, and nine Canadian provinces. The program provides critical education, training, and resources to make farm, ranch, and rural life safer and healthier for children and their communities.

MES/MJH is grateful to the Meade County Conservation District, the volunteers who helped make the day a success, the business partners for their time and talents, and the financial supporters for their contributions. We appreciate your investment into the safety and well-being of our students.
